Based on data obtained from the Brunei Darussalam Cancer Registry in 2024, 860 new cancer cases were recorded among citizens and permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam. 88 new cases among men were due to colorectal cancer, while 127 new cases among women were from breast cancer. The number shows an increase compared to 828 cases in 2023. Aside from that, in the same year, 368 deaths due to cancer were recorded. Among men, colorectal cancer is the most common type of cancer, followed by prostate cancer and lung cancer. Among women, breast cancer remains the most common cancer, followed by colorectal cancer and cervical cancer. The statistics show that although there are several types of cancer that often occur, focusing on prevention and early detection can have a major impact in reducing cases and mortality.
The Minister of Health outlined the matter in a message in conjunction with the World Cancer Day celebration. From the aspect of early detection, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Doctor Awang Haji Mohammad Isham bin Haji Jaafar shared that the Ministry of Health is actively implementing awareness campaigns on cancers that can be screened for at an early stage, especially breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer.
Through the National Health Screening Programme, a screening programme is provided free of charge to all citizens and permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam. The programme enables cancer to be detected at an early stage, increasing the chances of more effective treatment, and reducing the risk of complications or death from cancer.
The Minister of Health stressed the fight against cancer does not end after treatment. A number of cancer patients and former cancer patients face challenges such as long-term side effects as well as emotional and social stress. Therefore, ongoing support through support groups, psycho-social guidance and safe spaces to share experiences is essential.
The Ministry of Health will also continue to strengthen a more inclusive and patient-centred approach to cancer care, including addressing the challenges of access to treatment and the burden on patients and families. World Cancer Day is celebrated every 4th of February as a global effort to raise public awareness on cancer with this year's theme "United by Unique".
